Diversionary Theatre

Diversionary Theatre is one of the most storied LGBTQIA+ performing arts institutions in the United States, founded in 1986 in San Diego's University Heights neighborhood and recognized as the third-oldest LGBTQ theater company in the nation. The building at 4545 Park Boulevard was gifted to the organization by longtime board member Dr. Fritz Klein following his death in 2006, making Diversionary the only theater in San Diego that owns the building in which it operates. That ownership is itself a statement of permanence and community trust earned over nearly four decades of producing work that matters. The Mainstage seats 102 in a proscenium configuration and is an intimate, focused space where the relationship between performer and audience is immediate and personal. The Clark Cabaret, a separate 50-seat space within the building, hosts cabaret performances, variety shows, and smaller productions. The New Play Development Center supports emerging voices in LGBTQIA+ storytelling. Programming ranges from world premieres of new plays and musicals to acclaimed revivals, all centered on queer stories told with craft, risk, and specificity.
