Harvelle's Santa Monica

Established in 1931, Harvelle's is the oldest live music venue on the west side of Los Angeles and one of the most enduring music rooms in California. Located just four blocks from the Santa Monica Pier at 1432 Fourth Street, it has operated continuously through nearly a century of American popular music, hosting Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, Bo Diddley, and every blues luminary who passed through Southern California during the twentieth century. In more recent decades, the venue played a documented role in the discovery of Vintage Trouble. The room is dark, intimate, and deliberately sexy in its aesthetic. Portraits of musicians line the rafters. The stage is small, the ceiling is low, and the crowd stands close enough to feel the vibration of the instruments. Doors open at 8 PM every night of the week and shows run until 2 AM, making it one of very few venues in LA that maintains that schedule seven days a week. The Toledo Show on Sunday nights, a long-running variety night mixing blues, soul, funk, and burlesque performers in a rotating format, has been called one of the great live music experiences in Los Angeles. Wednesdays bring the House of Vibe All-Stars with their signature funk and soul mix. Beyond its recurring nights, the calendar programs burlesque shows, DJ sets, and live bands spanning blues, R&B, jazz, reggae, soul, drag, and funk. The venue has evolved deliberately away from a strictly old-school blues identity, which is exactly what has kept it alive and relevant.
