The Freight

The Freight is one of the most important live music venues in the United States, full stop. Founded in 1968 as an 87-seat coffeehouse by Nancy Owens in a former Berkeley used furniture store, it has grown over nearly six decades into a world-renowned nonprofit performing arts organization and one of the premier listening rooms anywhere on the planet. Located in the heart of the Downtown Berkeley Arts District, half a block from BART and two blocks from the UC Berkeley campus, The Freight presents traditional, roots, and globally-sourced music at the highest level, drawing internationally celebrated artists alongside the best regional talent the Bay Area produces. The 490-seat hall is equipped with a state-of-the-art sound system designed and installed exclusively by Meyer Sound Labs of Berkeley, making it one of the finest acoustic environments in Northern California. The programming is extraordinary in its depth and range, spanning bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, jazz, world music, Americana, folk, classical Indian, Latin, reggae, and beyond, with past and recent performers including Booker T. The Freight is an all-ages, alcohol-free, non-smoking venue, which makes it genuinely accessible to music listeners of every age and background. Coffee, tea, and snacks are available at the counter.
