The Roxy Theatre

The Roxy Theatre opened on September 20, 1973, with three nights of Neil Young, and it has never really stopped being remarkable. Founded by Lou Adler and Elmer Valentine, with original partners David Geffen, Elliot Roberts, and Peter Asher, the Roxy was conceived as a state-of-the-art venue where artists of any genre would feel at home. In its first year it hosted Cheech and Chong, Jerry Lewis, The Temptations, Frank Zappa, and Genesis, a range that signals the breadth of ambition that has defined the room ever since. The room sits at 9009 West Sunset Boulevard on the Sunset Strip, one of the most storied addresses in American rock and roll. At 500 capacity standing, it occupies a rare position: large enough to host touring artists with real draw, small enough that every show feels like a genuine event rather than a performance for a crowd. The stage is properly equipped, the sound system is excellent, the lighting is professional, and the venue includes an elevated VIP section, two dressing rooms, and a built-in bar. The Rocky Horror Picture Show had its first American run here in 1974. Since 2014 the Roxy has operated exclusively under Goldenvoice (Live Nation) as its promoter, which has brought big-name acts including U2 and Foo Fighters to the intimate room while maintaining the venue's original character and booking adventurousness. All ages are welcome; there is no standing age restriction.
