The San Gregorio General Store

The San Gregorio General Store is one of the most singular and irreplaceable live music destinations in the Bay Area, a working Old West general store and classic country bar that has been the heartbeat of San Gregorio since 1889 and has been run by former college professor George Cattermole since 1978. Located at the corner of Highway 84 and Stage Road in a town of roughly 200 people just one mile from San Gregorio State Beach, the store is the kind of place that makes first-time visitors do an illegal U-turn when they catch a glimpse of it from the road and then stay for three hours they had not planned on spending. Inside, the shelves hold cast iron cookware, books, clothing, home goods, toys, gifts, curiosities, groceries, and nearly everything else a coastal community might need, with a post office tucked in one corner. The full bar is renowned for its Bloody Marys and inventive cocktails like the Hibiscus Daydream and the Devil's Float, served by friendly bartenders to a crowd of locals and delighted visitors from around the world. Live music runs every Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday in two sets, performed both inside the historic building and outdoors in the Stage Yard, a dedicated outdoor patio stage that has expanded the venue's capacity and made warm-weather shows a genuine outdoor event. The programming leans toward folk, bluegrass, acoustic, Americana, and roots music, featuring local artists and occasional touring acts who understand that playing a room that has been alive since 1889 is not just a gig but a privilege. You can lose time here. That is the point.
