The Hillside Club was founded by a group of Berkeley women who wished to protect the Berkeley hillsides by promoting the development of the community in environmentally sensitive ways. Our goal is to provide a superb venue for musicians and listeners to experience the joy of live music. Tucked behind a striking silver gate on Shattuck Avenue just north of Ashby in Berkeley, Art House Gallery and Cultural Center is one of the most singular and soulful small venues in the East Bay, a place that feels less like a music club and more like stepping into someone's very particular and deeply considered vision of what a community gathering space should be. The interior is an explosion of psychedelic artwork, neon paint, lava lamps, blacklight installations, and counterculture artifacts that transport visitors to a Berkeley that most of the city has long since paved over. Owner Harold has been running the space since 2009 as a pure labor of love, hosting live acoustic music, spoken word, poetry open mics, art exhibitions, and potluck community events in a converted barn-like space that holds just under 50 people. The upright acoustic piano is a centerpiece, and past performers have included bluegrass acts, folk musicians, singer-songwriters, jazz players, and storytellers who have all played alongside names like Country Joe and the Fish, Eddie Jefferson, and the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Weekly open mic nights welcome musicians and poets with a $10 admission and a potluck format where guests are encouraged to bring food and beverages to share. The vibe is unapologetically Berkeley: politically engaged, artistically earnest, and completely free of pretension. Founded in 1968 as an 87-seat coffeehouse by Nancy Owens in a former Berkeley used furniture store, it has grown over nearly six decades into a world-renowned nonprofit performing arts organization and one of the premier listening rooms anywhere on the planet.
